Una crisis espiritual condujo a Tolstói (1828-1910) a un cristianimso sin dogma, basado en el amor y la no resistencia al mal. Siempre comprometido en la búsqueda de un paradigma de justicia, el artista extraería de aquella crisis un ideal de vida - pobreza voluntaria, trabajo manual, ascetismo- que le llevaría, en 1888, a ceder sus posesiones a su familia y, más tarde, los derechos de sus últimas obras al dominio público.
Subjetividad y sed de verdad se dan la mano en este Evangelio abreviado, la traducción de los cuatro evangelios que Tolstói realizó para revelar el verdadero mensaje de Cristo, que, en su opinión, tras mil ochocientos años de manipulaciones y tergiversaciones, la exégesis eclesiástica había ocultado. Por primera vez el lector en español tiene acceso a la que fue, según el escritor ruso, la obra más importante de su vida.
